Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This book excels not only in explaining the cause and nature of anxiety disorders and phobias but also in describing treatments. Director of the Anxiety Treatment Center in Santa Rosa (California), Bourne emphasizes the cognitive-behavioral model of treatment but includes information on biopsychiatry, intense psychotherapy, and spirituality as additional treatment modalities. This is truly a "workbook," with exercises designed to facilitate recovery, either through private use or in conjunction with professional therapy. If your library already owns the 1990 edition and money is an object, you can probably pass on this revision, which updates the definitions of anxiety and phobia so that they conform with the new DSM-IV diagnostic criteria and includes new information on the biological causes of anxiety and related treatment developments. However, if your collection lacks a good lay reader's book on anxiety and phobia, this is an excellent choice.Jennifer Amador, Central State Hosp. Medical Lib., Petersburg, Va.

My therapist recommended this book to me. I picked it up today! So far, this book is a life saver. There is something in there for everyone. If one thing don't work for you, that's okay. There will be something else that will. I like how you can write in the book or make copies of the pages. Best $25 I have ever spent.

It's estimated that nearly 25 million Americans experience some

It's estimated that nearly 25 million Americans experience some form of anxiety disorder that affects daily life, and for some becomes debilitating. Knowledge about what one is dealing with and how to overcome it is the best medicine and this book is a valuable resource for that kind of truly helpful and practical information. When I personally experienced a form anxiety disorder several years ago, I wish I had known about this book as it is one of the most helpful that I've read.

Written in an easy to understand style, the first chapters outline the various forms of anxiety disorders and their possible causes, followed by chapters on ways to recover such as relaxation, exercise, self-talk, coping with panic attacks, nutrition, etc. One section I found especially helpful was "Deflate the Danger" in the chapter on coping with panic attacks as it discussed ways to calm the physical symptoms, outlined why the things one thinks will happen physically during such an episode (heart attack, fainting, etc.) won't, and gave helpful information on how to break the connection between the thought process and the resulting symptoms. The chapter on exercise can provide motivation for embracing an active lifestyle to counter anxiety. The chapter on self-esteem is equally helpful with the tips on how to replace negative and self-sabotaging thinking with positive thoughts.

Each chapter includes some kind of plan of action, questions to answer, affirmations, journaling prompts, writing goals, etc., to help the reader become proactive in overcoming the effects of anxiety. I think anyone who suffers from any of the many forms of anxiety, whether mild or severe, or knows of someone who does will greatly benefit from this workbook whether done to supplement counseling or privately.

I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited, nor was a positive review required.

    Love the book so far

I've only read a couple sections so far but overall I would recommend buying this book if you suffer with anxiety/phobias. My therapist actually suggested I buy this. It's very informative! Love how is arranged as far as a written perspective.

    Helpful

A friend of mine was reading this book and getting a lot out of it so I got my own copy and have not been disappointed in it. Neither my friend nor I suffer from panic attacks, which this book gives a lot of focus to, but we both find the book helpful in dealing with our garden-variety GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorders).

This book was recommended to me when I was going through an episode of severe depression and anxiety, and I found it extremely helpful. Since I am a physician, I have recomended this to hundreds of patients as well. I think it treats anxiety, panic and phobias in a very holistic and well rounded approach. It's easy to understand without being too simplistic. If you are willing to invest the time and energy to do what the workbook suggests, you will go a long way towards recovery. One of the best "text or workbooks"I've ever purchased.
