Overview

Ember has been accepted into the mage academy, but not without cost. She has gained a new enemy, ancient and dark, whose entire purpose is to destroy all white magic and her along with it. After nearly losing her life in a brutal attack, DeMunth is assigned her guardian, and the keystone he wears, The Armor of Light, begins the transition that will make it a true power.

Kayla has lost most everything of importance to her—the people, the prestige, and all she fought for the past ten years. With nothing left to lose, she continues her search for the birthplace of The Sapphire Flute and the Wolfchild she believes to be its player. Her journey will take her to strange, foreign, and often dangerous places, and everything she had thought to be true will be proven wrong.

In a showdown full of betrayal and heroic loss, Ember and Kayla finally meet on the battlefield, fighting a war on two fronts—against C'Tan and her people, and the mysterious enemy bent on destroying all magic—the shadow weavers.

The story is full of power, betrayal, hope, and love. The elements of the universe are coming together, and none can know who will stand in the end.

Editorial Reviews

Margaret Turley
Karen Hoover has a talent for description that puts the reader inside the mind and skin of the characters she so colorfully details on the page. While reading her stories I get a 3-D panoramic vision as if I were in an IMAX theater. There were heartrending scenes of loss, humorous scenes with uncontrolled new skills, fantastic underwater and cave scenes, mind-boggling shape-shifters, and terrifying evil-doers, and dragons.

Meet the Author

Karen E. Hoover has loved the written word for as long as she can remember. Her favorite memory of her dad is the time he spent with Karen on his lap, telling her stories for hours on end. Her dad promised he would have Karen reading on her own by the time she was four years old … and he very nearly did. Karen took the gift of words her dad gave her and ran with it. Since then, she’s written two novels and reams of poetry. Her head is fairly popping with ideas, so she plans to write until she’s ninety-four or maybe even a hundred and four.

Inspiration is found everywhere, but Karen’s heart is fueled by her husband and two sons, the Rocky Mountains, her chronic addiction to pens and paper, and the smell of her laser printer in the morning.

    A fabulous read!

Karen does an amazing job with the second book in this series. I love the two main characters and thoroughly enjoyed the time spent reading.

    A Great Fantasy

I really enjoyed this second book in the Wolfchild Saga. It's a terrific fantasy with a perfect mix of action and romance, magic and danger. The main characters stole my heart, and I very much wanted them to succeed.

Even better the the first one!!!

All too often in fantasy trilogies or series, the second book fails to live up to the first one but not in this case. Karen Hoover took all the things I loved about the Sapphire Flute - multi-faceted, interesting characters, believable magic and an original world - and expanded on them without losing any of the depth. I highly recommend this for any lovers of classic or high fantasy, both older teens and adults.

    Phenomenal story!

Karen Hoover has done a fantastic job of packing so much into this story, but it's done in such a way that you just can't stop reading. This is one of those un-put-down-able books that you keep thinking about for days after you finish it. I don't know if I've said it before, but Karen has such a poetic, beautiful way with words. She draws you in until you love all the characters (even the bad guys), the beautiful world in which they live, the magic.oh, the magic. It's just incredible.

You can't help but identify with Ember, who has such a responsibility on her shoulders, who has endured such loss and confusion and heartache, and who is for the first time experiencing romantic feelings toward DeMunth, her protector. And Kayla, with her love for Brant, and her confusion over another man who is vying for her heart-love this dynamic. The romantic aspects just heighten the stakes in the story.

A great continuation of the story!

he Armor of Light is a wonderful continuation of the exciting story in that began in The Sapphire Flute. I love both of the main characters, Ember and Kayla. They each have unique strengths and weaknesses and I could relate to both of them. The book is full of action, danger and just the right amount of romance. The exciting ending took my breath away! Now I can't wait to read the third book! If you enjoy epic fantasy, then you'll love both The Sapphire Flute and The Armor of Light.

A Fantastic Sequel to The Sapphire Flute!

When Karen Hoover contacted me and asked me to review her second book in the Wolfchild Saga I simply couldn't say no. I had been really, REALLY looking forward to continuing this series ever since reading The Sapphire Flute. In fact, some of you might recall just how much I loved that book. I made some pretty bold assertions, likening Hoover to some timeless, favorite authors -- Madeleine L'Engle, Lloyd Alexander... I stand behind those comments 100%.

So often it seems that second books in series don't quite live up to the debuts. Thankfully, this is not remotely the case with The Armor of Light. This book is every bit as good as The Sapphire Flute, and in fact is quite possibly even better! To put it simply, these stories are those that I have always dreamed of being able to write. Not only that, I sincerely wish these books had been around when I was a young reader, just so I could have that much more time to re-read them over the years. I can't wait for my own daughter to read these books down the road and enjoy them as much as I have.

Hoover has made fantasy and adventure new again for me. I am completely captivated by the quest of the Chosen Ones (of whom we've only met a few) to unite the magical keystones and save their world. There is a wide array of characters on both the side of good and that of evil who are wonderfully developed. Relationships between many of the characters are molded, deepened, and in some heartbreaking cases, torn apart. With this second book the pieces of the puzzle really begin to come together, as we follow Ember's and Kayla's separate adventures that are destined to join as one. I truly cannot wait to see what Hoover's next book in the series brings to the story as we discover the next keystone and Chosen One.

I urge you to give Hoover's Wolfchild Saga a try if you enjoy adventure and fantasy. The story is so engaging that I believe you'll find yourself totally immersed in the world that Hoover has created. As I read her books, I had a vivid picture of the scenes taking place and the story still sits with me long after finishing The Armor of Light.
