Overview

In The Art of Kitchen Design, leading kitchen architect Johnny Grey sounds a rousing note of liberation for the kitchen and shows, fascinatingly, that a kitchen can be efficient and contemporary yet at the same time offer traditional comforts and style as an elegant living space.

Johnny Grey find his inspiration from many sources, including the traditional country kitchens of rural Scandinavia, the American Arts and Crafts Movement and the farmhouse kitchens of Britain which evolved naturally as family rooms providing warmth, comfort and company as well as hearty meals for healthy country appetites. In his approach to kitchen design, he demonstrates that timeless freestanding dressers and cupboards can do as good or better a job than lookalike commercial kits, while being more responsive to the individual space concerned.

Lavishly illustrated throughout with over 150 super colour photographs, the book shows 'unfitted' kitchen solutions working in every type of kitchen space -- from large and lofty to small and awkward. As well as presenting case studies, it is full of intriguing new ideas that will interest not only anyone planning a new kitchen but also designers, architects, decorators and craft enthusiasts. Beautifully designed and produced, The Art of Kitchen Design combines tradition and contemporary designs in ways that will help every reader make their kitchen a joy to be in.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
British kitchen designer Grey is a champion of "unfitted kitchens" a "well-planned mixture of free-standing furniture and architectural fittings" as opposed to the "fitted kitchens" of built-ins and uniform cabinets that became popular in suburban America in the 1950s and 1960s. Here he details his approach to kitchen design, beginning with the social role and development of kitchens from the 17th century to the present. Although he does discuss kitchen design broadly, the styles depicted represent Grey's philosophy of "unfitted kitchens." A basic kitchen design planning book, such as Elaine Martin Petrowski's Dream Kitchen Planning (Pedigree, 1996), is recommended as a first choice, but this one is a good addition if kitchen design is a popular topic.
