Overview

Drawing on recordings Martha Argerich made for Deutsche Grammophon and Philips over a period that lasted almost 50 years, this three-disc limited edition package encapsulates her career and provides a broad sampling of her repertoire. Starting with her 1961 recording of Chopin's "Scherzo No. 3 in C sharp minor," and concluding with her 2009 reading of Schubert's "Rondo in A major," the survey presents her work in chronological order and shows her in many roles, as a solo artist, a concerto virtuoso, and in later recordings, a performer of chamber music. The first part of Argerich's career found her recording much solo piano music, but since the 1980s she recorded more frequently with other musicians, such as violinist Gidon Kremer and cellist Mischa Maisky, and her role as a collaborator is well-documented here. The range of music represented is quite wide, extending from the keyboard works of Bach, Haydn, and Mozart, to modernist compositions by Bartók of Prokofiev. At the end of Disc 3 are two bonus tracks of previously unreleased material. The sound of these recordings is only slightly uneven, due to the changes of venues, recording conditions, and engineers, but overall the reproduction is of high quality. The set is packaged as a hardcover book, and the booklet includes biographical information and many photographs of Argerich.
