Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891) The oldest of five children, and from an early age exhibited the business and marketing genius that would earn him the title of Greatest Showman on Earth many times over. He is known for founding the circus that became the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, but was also an author, publisher, philanthropist, and even politician. LIFE magazine dubbed him "the patron saint of promoters" and called him one of the 100 most important people of the millennium.
