Overview

With unprecedented access to Neil Gaiman’s personal archives, author Hayley Campbell gives an insider’s glimpse into the artistic inspirations and musings of one of the world’s most visionary writers.

Over the last twenty-five years, Neil Gaiman has mapped out a territory in the popular imagination that is uniquely his own. A master of several genres, including, but not limited to, bestselling novels, children’s books, groundbreaking comics, and graphic novels, it’s no wonder Gaiman has been called a rock star of the literary world. Now, for the first time, Gaiman reveals the inspiration behind his signature artistic motifs, giving author Hayley Campbell a rare, in-depth look at the contents of his personal notebooks and early work, even some of his abandoned projects. The result is a startling, intimate glimpse into the life and mind of one of the world’s most creative visionaries. The book is the first comprehensive, full-color examination of Gaiman’s work to date, tracing the genesis of his creative life as a starving journalist in the UK to his life as a successful comic book writer and, ultimately, a bestselling novelist.

Complete with running commentary, interview text, and annotated material that contextualizes the visual material, this deluxe compendium contains never-before-seen material and promises to be every bit as inspired as Gaiman is himself.

Readers will feel like they've stumbled upon Neil Gaiman's personal scrapbook in what is the first biography of the popular and endearingly strange author. Writer Campbell charts Gaiman's career from freelance journalist to comic book writer to novelist in pages gorgeously littered with drawings, photos, handwritten notes, and early story outlines. Gaiman's clever and wry humor shines through in conducted interviews and running commentary that even surfaces in the photo captions. Presented like a coffee-table book, it serves as both a beautiful display piece and wealth of information, including morsels on Gaiman's stab at a music career, his conversations with writer Alan Moore for advice on graphic novels, his collaboration with sf author Terry Pratchett, and his work on the beloved television classic Doctor Who. VERDICT Campbell has clearly taken great care to construct such a lavish and detailed offering and fans will be hanging on every word and illustration for a deeper insight into Gaiman's eccentric genius. Highly recommended for anyone who has dearly loved any of his many works.—Kate DiGirolomo, Library Journal

This book is a treasure! Miss Campbell has very obviously gone to great lengths and put a lot of work into this wonderful tome.  So many insights into Mr. Gaiman's thoughts, his scribbles, his doodles, notes and sketches you will  find nowhere else reside within the pages of this incredible book.  Fans of Neil Gaiman as well as artists  and aspiring writers will be astonished at how much they get out of owning this book.  I have read it cover to  cover three times already and I find something new and astounding every time.  I love that Miss Campbell  put this book together, and I suggest she do it for other beloved authors as well.  Stephen King, J.K.Rowling,  James Patterson, George R. R. Martin, and many others: we would love to see books like this one for those authors! If you want a huge peek into the imagination of Neil Gaiman, presented in a wonderfully delightful way, buy this book.  You won't be disappointed.  I guarantee it :-)
