The Art of the Baroque Trumpet, Vol. 5: An Italian Concert

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
Naxos' pleasurable series of Baroque trumpet music continues apace with Volume Five, devoted entirely to the Italian repertory. As on previous installments, trumpeter Niklas Eklund offers a mixture of familiar and rare gems. Naxos' pleasurable series of Baroque trumpet music continues apace with Volume Five, devoted entirely to the Italian repertory. As on previous installments, trumpeter Niklas Eklund offers a mixture of familiar and rare gems. A zippy performance of Vivaldi's popular Concerto for Two Trumpets opens the disc, assisted by Jeffrey Segal, who returns at the end for a charmingly tuneful two-trumpet Sonata by the little-known composer Franceschini. But the disc's real treasures are the arias, which are interspersed between each of the instrumental selections. Voice and trumpet was a favorite combination of Baroque composers, and listening to the pure tone of soprano Maria Keohane soaring in tandem with Eklund's gleaming sound, one can easily understand why. There is a gratifying variety of arias, too, including a pair by Vivaldi, others by Ziani and Galuppi, and an especially rousing piece with two trumpets by Albinoni. The celebratory character of most of these works makes this recording well -suited for the holidays, though it is music that can be enjoyed year-round.
