Overview

While Thrice's third effort bears the imprint of Sub City, the charitable arm of thriving L.A. indie Hopeless, the grandiose die-cut packaging of The Artist in the Ambulance also features the famous rainbow spine of Island, or, in the parlance of the 21st century business umbrella, Island Def Jam Music Group, a division of Universal. Following the same route as sonic compatriots the Used, A.F.I., and the 30 or so other bands thanked in the liner notes, Thrice makes the jump to major-label land with the aid of big-league production and mixing, sick cash flow, and the freedom to stretch both its sound and its vision (each song receives its own panel, upon which each bandmember ruminates). For Artist, helmsman Brian McTernan and mixing guru Andy Wallace have tightened the seams that hold together Thrice's patchwork print of post-hardcore bellow, emotional bluster, and unabashed metal wankery, ensuring an album that teems with the urgency of Thrice's peers' recent work. "The Abolition of Man," "Cold Cash and Colder Hearts," and especially "Paper Tigers" could have easily appeared on 2002's Illusion of Safety; however, none would have been as tightly wound as they appear here. Indeed, the latter cut sounds like a vintage hardcore rant bleeding through on a cassette dub of Accept's Restless & Wild. Wrapped in razor wire and glinting in the moonlight, "Paper Tiger" leads into the churning rhythms of "Hoods on Peregrine." Here, hardcore is switched out for emo, but the technical metal framework stays. Elsewhere, first single "All That's Left" drops a little too much homeroom poetry on listeners ("We tried to bleed the sickness/But we drained our hearts instead/We are the dead"), but still manages to move along at a brisk, teary-eyed clip. It's guaranteed to be the theme song to a tortured teen romance. The more traditional hook of "All That's Left" is welcome. Together with the album's relatively straightforward title track, it checks the unforgiving pace of The Artist in the Ambulance, which sometimes becomes so busy with complicated riffing, solar plexus percussion, and wordy lyricisms that it starts to implode. Certainly benefiting from the ears and editing of McTernan and Wallace, Artist is the strongest Thrice album yet, meaning that Island/Universal gets its money's worth in the best way possible: with good music.

You'll find enough quality emo-core on the band's major-label debut to keep your head and heart banging. (B)

this cd is a must have in your music collection. TAITA is worth an ear drum and both eye brows. Thrice music rivals any band, the lyrics are well written and is presented to you with a lot of depth and emotion. you can not pass this one up! i promise you wont be dissappointed.

From the beginning i have loved thrice...and have highly anticipated their new album. I quickly fell in love with it as i did with identity crisis and illusion of safety. Over and over again, all day long, i listen to it and it has not gotten old. These guys are lyrical genuises and write amazing music. I.E "No It's not love though feels like fire inside of yoru veins burning right beneath the wrist begging for a razors's kiss to free it from your skin"(Blood Clots and Black Holes) and the boys go through many different time changes on numerous song. you don't say many bands doing this and doing it well. Also the drum beats are amazing, especially in Hood on Peregrine. Dustin pours his heart and soul into the lyrics while teppie, riley, and ed, being the great musicians they are, create unforgettable music. EVERYONE BUY THE ARTIST IN THE AMBULANCE and when you fall in love with go get Illusion of safety and Identity Crisis and fall inlove with them too.

this cd is the best thrice CD yet. It has a mixture of punk, hardcore, semi-metal, and pop-punk songs. Some good songs that i like on the CD are cold cash and colder hearts, all that's left, artist in the ambulance, and etc..

With the current reign of untalented people (had to edit) on the radio now a days, its almost inconcieveable to think that a band could come out with a good cd...Good Lord, it happened! The new Thrice is incredible...The musicianship and knowledge of what their doing is all the better. These guys are genuine. On songs like All Thats Left, and Artist In The Ambulance they show that even being hardcore can touch mainstream and still blow away everyone in their path. Its full of amazingly executed guitar riffs by Teppei and Dustin, precision math-metal basslines by Eddie, and cool, creative drum patterns by Riley make this a definite cd favorite. In comparisson to the past Thrice albums, it is possible to tell that they have greatly matured since...say Identity Crisis. Matured not sold out. Its a definite collectable for any music lover...rock!

When I bought this album, I played it and listened to the whole cd. I was amazed at how good they have become from their preceding cds. This cd is a great blend of punk, rock, and emo. It is the best cd I have bought in a long time, if you do not get this cd, you miss out.

the artist in the ambulance is everything a record should be. The album has an outsdanding "flow" quality, all of the songs fit together like pages of a story. One thing that seperates thrice from other bands these days is how they break from traditional a-b format songwriting, creating music that is unpredictable and exciting. they put tons of effort into every song, jumping from 4/4 to 5/4 time signatures in a second. Deep lyrics with outstanding vocals, Complex guitar and bass riffs, and drumming that fits the music perfectly...this band was created by God himself.

Thrice has done it again!!! I had been waiting for this cd to come out since they day I heard it was going to be released on July 22, 2003 and I was not disappointed. In fact, I was surprised and pleased, because Thrice has evolved and grown with their music by trying new things, while still keeping the same GREAT Thrice feel to their music. If you love music or even if you don't, you will love this album I promise!!! The Artist In The Ambulance:Best CD of They YEAR!!! Nice Job Thrice!!

Right off the bat, if you haven't heard the two previous Thrice CDs, you're missing out on what I dare say is a once in a lifetime music experience, as no band I've ever listened to has come close to their music. Being a fan of Thrice for quite some time now, me and my friends were awaiting the release from them more than any other band. A bunch of us loaded into a car and bought The Artist In The Ambulance at 10:45 in the morning on the day it was released, and we were all 100% satisfied with the album. It's an amazing blend of unbelievable guitar riffs, super bass runs, hard-hitting drumming and powerful vocals, which all blend together to make this the best CD in my 120+ CD collection. If you have even the SLIGHTEST intrest in possibly getting this cd, I can only urge you as much as I can to do so, it's one purchase you will not regret.

The highly anticipated album "The Artist In The Ambulance" by Thrice is out and if you don't have it already then what are you waiting for! Thrice are one of the best bands around whom have stayed loyal to their fans. Although this newer album is quite distinct from the others, fans can see that Thrice have grown as a band and not just "sell-out" like many present bands have. Thrice have strong views and aren't afraid of saying what they feel which many love; they sing their hearts out. Not only is their music touching and meaningful, but by purchasing this album, portions of the proceeds will be donated. THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO SAY EXCEPT THRICE IS GREAT AND HERE TO STAY!

The Artist in the Ambulance is by far the best album to come from Thrice. The music is harder and simply sounds cooler than anything before in Identity Crisis or Illusion of safety. I also enjoy the lyrics on this album more, although you cant hear what they are saying on songs such as Paper Tigers, but oh well, its still good. I would recommend this anyone who likes Thrice's previous albums or just hardcore punk in general. This CD is definitely worth the 12 bucks or so you will pay, so go buy it.

I'm an all-out Thrice fan, but I think people that haven't even heard of Thrice would fall in love with the band after hearing this album. This album competes with their last album, The Illusion of Safety. Yeah... It's that good. I love this album and I would recommend it to anyone. I give it 5 stars.

Thrice has done it again with their album "The Artist in the Ambulance" Tracks 1 Through 12 - Will induce orgasm for your ears. Thrice has had tremendous talent since their first studio album - Identity Crisis and now on a Major Label with "The Artist in the Ambulance" they've improved their vocals/guitars/bass/drums. With Illusion of Safety, Their 2nd Studio Album the sound was very good but it lacked a togetherness, the sound now is much more refined and shows talent like no other. Thrice's music captivates me as if I was crushing on a girl. Their power is so strong it really makes have chills go down your spine. You may have been a fan since their debut in `98 or a became a fan last week - This Album is for all to enjoy. Buy one for Baby George, one for aunt Mary, one for uncle Bob, one for Grandpa Mortichai. They'll all be rocking and having a good time. BUY THE ARTIST IN THE AMBULANCE. Thank You.

Thrice releases their album titled "The Artist in the Ambulance." At first glance this album may seem a departure from the super-riff driven "Identity Crisis" and the dark and melodic undertones of "The Illusion of Safety" but with this album the boys in thrice were determined to create "memorable songs, not just memorable parts." They have done just that. If you own any of the Thrice albums and compare it too this one you can almost literaly watch their sound mature, and through it all they still retain the dark, melodic, and intelligent sound that makes Thrice one of the greatest "undiscovered acts" in rock today. So do yourself a favor, scrounge up fifteen odd bucks, run to your local record store and pick up a copy of "The Artist in the Ambulance."
