Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
Over fifty years after his death, the murder of John F. Kennedy still resonates with Americans. As a watermark in American History, many Americans can measure history from before or after the assassination. Children today have other mile stones in their history, but the importance of the assassination of Kennedy should not be forgotten or diminished in the importance it played in the history of the United States. Benoit has presented the day and the days following in straightforward detail without delving too deeply into horror of the day. The author begins by providing a very brief summary of Kennedy's presidency and the impact some of his policies may have played in his murder. The author then provides a step-by-step account of the route of the motorcade, what went wrong, and the immediate aftermath that began to spawn the numerous conspiracy theories surrounding Kennedy's death. The last half of the text is made up of Oswald's part in the assassination as well as his actions immediately before and after the murder, concluding with his own murder by Jack Ruby. Full color and black-and-white illustrations appear throughout the text. Additional sources to consult, as well as a list of internet sources, add depth to the text, which is part of the "Cornerstones of Freedom" series. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
