Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Hepler
Well over one thousand years of history are covered in this catalog of people, places, events, and artifacts of the ancient Greek and Roman empires. Opening with an introduction to the Minoans and the rise of the city-states, the book cover the growth of the Ancient World under subheadings such as daily life, Greeks at war, Greek theater, science and literature, the Etruscans, the Roman army, trade and agriculture, and the rise of Christianity. This oversize book is crowded with illustrations, drawings and paintings of art and architecture, maps, picture captions, and a variety of typefaces. Photographs are neither as high quality nor as dramatically presented as those in the DK series, but straightforward text, the categorizing of information, and an index makes this atlas useful for report writing, even though most of the material may be found in other sources.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-7This chronological, largely pictorial history of the classical world includes maps and diagrams that depict layouts of cities, military campaigns, trade routes, etc. Double-page spreads devoted to aspects of ancient Greek and Roman life, culture, and history also provide graphs and full-color photographs and drawings of artifacts, archeological sites, and scenes from everyday life. The overall visual effect is attractive and eye-catching. The text is brief, informative, well written, and logically organized. The book isn't meaty enough for reports but browsers or those wanting an overview will find it a good choice. Readers needing more information could turn to Mike Corbishley's Ancient Rome and Anton Powell's Ancient Greece (both Facts on File, 1989).Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukee, OR
