The recent publication of Yuri Okunev¿s outstanding The Axis of World History is a remarkable event in the history of world culture. Mr. Okunev, a scientist of international stature, is the author of numerous scientific articles and monographs, and the publication of Axis places his name among the leading socio-political and spiritual thinkers of our time. The book is multifaceted. The author demonstrates civic courage, brilliant talent, and penetrating wisdom in his profound, original analysis of the central problems of the oldest nation. In one volume, Okunev answers the core questions asked by generations of Jews and non-Jews. Furthermore, based on the tragic lessons of the 4000-year Jewish history, he brings clarity to the burning current problems of mankind. Okunev gives profound, substantiated answers to several questions under consideration, guiding the reader through the intricacies of every problem. His analysis of various controversial views and approaches is exhaustive and objective. He involves the reader the reader becomes a participant in the discussion. He proves convincingly the insolvency of various solidly established myths, whether the myths¿ origins and agendas are overt or hidden. Finally, he offers his evaluation and leads the reader to a logical, objective conclusion. The book consists of two parts, each presenting a detailed examination of a certain basic problem. Okunev starts with the following direct and tantalizing questions: Why are the Jews persecuted always and everywhere? and, Why, still, does this tiny nation persist in its existence in spite of perpetual victimization while its persecutors and abusers have vanished one after another into the fog of history? After consummate analysis, he gives the answers. The second part answers the question, What is Zionism? Currently, Zionism is a major target of governments, non-governmental organizations, university campuses, and ¿ordinary people¿ in the streets. Everybody is against it, but nobody has a clear understanding of what it is. The answer given in Axis is simple: ¿Zionism is a national liberation movement of Jewish people.¿ Every nation is supposed to be allowed to advocate and defend its national identity this right is among the cornerstones of the UN Charter. However, a sole exception to this right is being insisted upon by all of these united nations: that of the Jewish nation. This part reads like a gripping novel. In his previous book, Letters from the XX Century, Okunev proves himself a master of brief but epic storytelling. In Axis, descriptions of the Six Day War, the battle for Jerusalem, and the Yom Kippur War force the reader to forget everything but the history of the people in the making. Undoubtedly, Axis is of great interest and importance to the worldwide audience. It is necessary reading for any individuals whose cultural-spiritual background has a Biblical base, namely, all Jews and Christians. It offers enlightening reading for people of other faiths, as well as for atheists. For those who are free from prejudice, it provides moral reassurance. For anti-Semites, however, it presents a tough challenge. Professor Alexander Yabrov, MD,Ph.D.,D.Sc., Princeton, New JerseyWas this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
