Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
Capstone Press's "You Choose" series uses the familiar "choose your own adventure" format to allow young readers to experience the complex menu of options available to adolescents at fascinating periods of history such as the Civil War or the Salem Witch Trials. Here, "YOU are living on the island of Tenochtitlan in the Valley of Mexico around the 15th century," as European conquistadors are arriving to threaten the Aztec way of life. Readers can choose vicariously to experience the life of an Aztec girl (who may become a healer, marketplace judge, wife, widow, mother), noble Aztec youth (with a passion both for landscape gardening and warriorship), and Spanish page in the service of the conquering forces with their rapacious lust for gold. Readers are presented with various branching choices that lead to other branching choices that lead ultimately to success or failure, happiness or heartbreak, life or death. Raum exhibits appropriate cultural sensitivity in making both Aztec and Spanish youths sympathetic characters with understandable motivations, even as neither culture is portrayed as without its horrors (human sacrifice, boundless greed). The "choose your adventure" format works effectively to allow readers to inhabit divergent, culturally situated points of view, convincingly supporting the text's claim that "Seeing history from many points of view is an important part of understanding it." Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.
