Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5 The four 12-year-old girls who comprise ``The Baby-sitters Club'' are worried about a robber whose pattern involves first calling the possible victim and then remaining silent. The girls, responsible babysitters, are at the same time gossipy girls who are variously at odds with members of their families, their schoolwork, and above all, boys. It is one of the latter who turns out to be Claudia's ``Phantom caller,'' brave enough to dial, but too shy to ask her to the dance. Martin sometimes writes as her audience would (Claudia ``goes'' rather than ``says,'' for instance). Claudia is an underachiever, but gifted in art; she has a brilliant sister she doesn't like; and she is Japanese. She should be an interesting and complex character, but she is hardly distinguishable from the other three babysitters. This contrived story is one of those ephemeral paperbacks that can easily be forgotten. Carolyn Jenks, Oyster River Elementary School, Durham, N.H.
Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
The girls are all back in this new adventure with the Baby-Sitters Club (BSC). Friends Mary Ann, Stacey, Kristy, and Claudia have formed an alliance to organize their babysitting duties, so that someone is always available for every job and each girl knows every client. When Mary Ann reads in the paper that a burglar is calling homes in a nearby city and then hanging up without talking, only to rob the house later in the evening, the girls all become concerned that the phantom caller will move into their town. Now, at their BSC meetings, the talk is sometimes about boys, the upcoming Halloween dance, and upcoming jobs but most of the time the discussion is about the phantom caller. When one of the girls receives a "phantom" call while on a job, their nerves become truly rattled. Every sound and every unfamiliar crick becomes a threat. True to their nature, the girls rally around each other and manage to solve the mystery while caring for their young clients. In the telling of the story, Martin reinforces teamwork, sibling relationships, character building, and fun. Upper elementary grade students have come to rely on this author for interesting stories, and this tale is no exception. For readers who require a larger dose of BSC information, Scholastic provides a Web link to the girls. All elementary media collections and language arts classrooms will want to include this latest adventure in their collection. Reviewer: Joyce Rice

Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls

One of my fav books. I really like the BSC. There are ever so many books! There is 135 ( I think ) of the reguler series. Then there is; California Diarys ,( about Dawn's life in California) and Baby- Sitters Little Sister,( about Karen, Kristy's imaginitive little stepsister), Baby-sitters Super Specials ( fun trips), Baby-Sitters Portriot Collection ( about each Baby Sitter' s past, it is basicly just their biography), Baby-Sitters Mysterys ( mysterys that involve The Baby Sitters and Baby Sittting and The Club) , and the Baby-Sitters Super Mysterys ( the same as mysterys) . The members are ( plus what book they joined the club in ps the ones that are from the start they were the members of the club till they asked people 2 join their club ) : Claudia v.p. ( from the start) ,Kristy p. ( from the start) ,Stacey tresuerer ( from the start) , Dawn alternate officer ( book 4 ) , and Mary Anne ( from the start) secertary. Then comes in assosiate members Shannon ( book 12?) and Logan( book 10) . In comes Mallory (book 14?) and Jessi ( same book as Mallory) junior officers. Finally in book 90 Abbey ( the last member 2 join) comes in. So, in this book Claudia and The BSC are gtting creepy phone calls! Ahhhh! Is it The Phantom Phone Caller!? He is a theif and he calls then hangs up without a word just checking to see if the people are home yet, then when they don't answer he goes over and robs them! The BSC is really worried and pretty ( well a lot) scared. Oh what are they gonna do? Find out in this book! I like this book so you likey or no likey? Hit yes if this is helpful but no pressure if ya don't wanna. Thanks bye. - bsc girl.

    Tigerfoot and Dawncloud

Tigerfoot: "Thank you, Jadestar." He padded to warriors den. Dawncloud: "Thank you for letting me join." She dipped her head and looked at Serval-leap. "Hunting, huh? Can I come?"

A sweet she and a tom and kits

A white she padded in. She had herbs and berries as a gift. Behind her padded two kits. The tom was not their father. The white she laid down the buddle. "For you, Jadestar, for raising kits," she meowed politely," My name is Tinycloud. I have two kits of my own. Tigerkit and Icekit. The tom is a friend, not my mate. He is Pantherfoot."
