Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
As introductory text, this book serves a purpose in bringing readers a glimpse of the 700 small islands that make up the Bahamas. Decisions regarding formatting and presentation detract from the book's utility. The publisher misses many opportunities for sidebars and additional highlights throughout the book. Page layouts are simple, and island maps are presented in monochromatic drawings that are hard to see. The text is more general than necessary for elementary school students who are exploring world regions, and may not sustain the interest of young readers for long. While the land, economy, agriculture, people, culture, and customs are diverse and interesting, the text may sound monotonous"The Bahamas is a very friendly place. The people are nice, and the weather and the sights are wonderful." A feature entitled Bahamas Trivia includes only four entries. Pleasing photography redeems this volume in The Child's World series of "Countries: Faces and Places" books. 2003, The Child's World,
