Though these laws were enacted long ago, in the sky above there is a yearly reminder: an enormous Rift that threatens to burn the world and is only held back by the spells of the nobility. A Rift created by those who felt anyone should be able to cast whatever spells they wish.
Krysilla wants far more than the exhausting life as the wife of a baker who leaves all the work to her while he does whatever he likes. Aching to cast spells she's never learned, and secretly using spells denied her since her marriage, she tries to gain some salvation by being a good wife to her husband...until the day she helps a handsome, feverish minstrel who's collapsed by the side of the road.
