Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Banners were used in by the County Durham miners' unions in England as the battle standards of the union movement from 1869 to the strike of 1984/5 and the subsequent destruction of the coalfield by the Conservative government. This volume examines their manufacture; the meanings behind their designs and mottos (inspired by Christianity, Marxism, socialism, or labor events); and their uses in strikes, marches, funerals, and the annual Durham Miners' Gala. The second half of the book is devoted to a catalogue of short histories of every colliery where a banner was in use, as well as details of the over 500 banners that were used by the miners and their supporters. Distributed by Books International. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
