Children's Literature - Gretchen HesbacherCristina is having her birthday party in the barn with all of the farm animals. The barn is decorated and the guests arrive. Celebratory activities include dancing and playing with the bunnies. But what happens after a balloon pops is really exciting! This appealing, yet simple story perfectly captures common themes for young children in a delightful way. The illustrations are soft yet clear, with activities portrayed that children easily understand. Eating cake and ice cream, opening presents, dressing up, and dancing are all so well drawn that children will love to look at this book and relate it to their own experiences.
School Library Journal - School Library JournalPreSAs in many of her earlier titles, Tafuri places her characteristic full-sized animals and large boldface type across big, broad pages. This time, however, the colored-pencil and watercolor artwork has a decidely pastel palette and the story is as flat as the pictures. Cristina celebrates her fourth birthday with a party in the barn. The guests, especially the girls, arrive in pale party clothes reminiscent of a bygone era, and are grossly overdressed. When they dance, their bodies show little movement, and their faces have stilted expressions. The climaxa balloon pops, the animals scatter, the goat finds the presentexhibits hardly more tension or action. Tafuri's solid colors and shapes in This Is the Farmer (Greenwillow, 1994) make it a far more successful effort than The Barn Party.Harriett Fargnoli, Great Neck Library, NY
Lauren PetersonArriving with beautifully wrapped presents, Cristina's guests stream into the gaily decorated barn, and the party begins. They play games with the clown and dance to the music, but the best part of a barn party is feeding and petting the animals. When the pop of a balloon sends the animals skittering off in all directions, everyone runs to catch them. The clever surprise ending shows an escaped goat under an apple tree opening Cristina's presents. Preschoolers and beginning readers will be attracted to the book's generous size and its" close-ups of children and animals. The simple text is presented in large, black type and set against a backdrop of colored pencil-and-watercolor illustrations in pleasing pastels. The delightful double-spread pictures capture the fun and excitement of a special day.
