Overview

The Baseball Scrapbook, with its more than 700 rare photographs and information-packed essays and captions, provides a unique evocation of baseball's glorious past and present. More than any other illustrated history, this volume is guaranteed to leave the reader convinced of the truth of pitcher-turned-author Jim Bouton's cogent observation: "You see, you spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time."

The approach here is not the usual decade-by-decade review, but rather an exploration of the game's sustaining themes: the magical appeal of legendary players and teams; the unmatched artistry and skill of those playing at the major league level; and the "interior stadium of the mind" which creates for fans of all ages the nostalgia-laden ballpark experience. Vivid prose and a tapestry of photos recreate the unique flavor of each distinctive period of baseball history: the Gay Nineties Era of skilled .400 hitters and quixotic, combative managers; the threatened collapse of the nation's pastime under the scourge of the infamous Black Sox scandal; Ruth, Foxx and the other swashbuckling sluggers of the "Big Stick Epoch" of the 1920s and 1930s; the unprecedented happenings and unparalleled characters of the chaotic wartime period; the fifties which were dominated by Willie, Mickey and Duke; and finally on down to today's total athletes who combine power, speed and grace.
