Cast into the spotlight by the post-9/11 ubiquity of the touching and timely "Superman," Five for Fighting -- essentially a nom de disque for singer/songwriter John Ondrasik -- became torchbearers of sorts for quietly spiritual balladry, a path that's furthered on this follow-up. Ondrasik often wears his heart on his sleeve, and here, he opens up to muse about the world that surrounds him on the dreamy "NYC Weather Report" and the feelings that well up within him on the love paean "Nobody". The leader's intricate, Elton-esque piano work is the primary pitch over which The Battle for Everything is fought, and here, that terrain is significantly more rocky -- which ups the energy level significantly on the surprisingly sensual "The Taste." Ondrasik even relaxes enough to allow his goofy side to slip through the cracks on "Disneyland," a lilting ditty about a wayward crocodile that Randy Newman might have written in one of his more frivolous moods. Acting on the adage that the pen is mightier than the sword -- and an acoustic piano potentially more powerful than an overloaded Marshall amp -- Ondrasik fights his battles quietly, but with consistent success.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Five for Fighting was struggling along, another nominal adult alternative pop
ock band led by a singer/songwriter, until something unexpected happened. A song from their second album, recorded for their second major label in a row, became an overnight hit, staying on the radio for months. Of course, things weren't quite as simple as that. The song was "Superman It's Not Easy," and the reason it was a hit is that millions of listeners found that the song captured their hearts in the tragic, turbulent days following the terrorist attacks of 9-11-01. This would be a mighty heavy thing for an established artist to grapple with, but for John Ondrasik -- who is Five for Fighting -- he chose a group name rightly believing that it was catchier and easier to remember than his name -- it was a trickier thing, since he made his breakthrough with a song that moved many listeners at a very vulnerable time in their lives. Following up a career-making single like that is not easy, and Ondrasik took his time to deliver Five for Fighting's third album, slowly working with producer Bill Bottrell best-known for his work with Sheryl Crow, and eventually releasing The Battle for Everything in February 2004. The extra time was a smart move, since the delay between albums helped lower expectations while giving Ondrasik time to craft a record that's at once more assured and supple than its predecessor. Though he throws in some rock elements, like the elastic bluesy slide guitar of "Infidel," he's unashamed about embracing the mantle of middlebrow adult alternative singer/songwriter, and he's turned in a very accomplished, professional record that illustrates he has more ambition than such younger peers like John Mayer. Where Mayer comes across like a cute collegiate singing to impress the girls, Ondrasik is deadly serious, as his songtitles alone illustrate -- "Devils," "God," and "Angels" are all named, and he sings about "Dying" and an "Infidel." His music is appropriately somber and self-serious, reminiscent of the gloomy, introspective side of Dave Matthews crossed with the cinematic scope of mid-'70s Billy Joel and the pompous narcissism of Sting, whose high, careening voice was clearly an influence. Musically, this can result in some nice craftsmanship, and if judged at merely a sonic level, it's one of the more interesting, detailed adult alternative records of recent years.

I haven't listened to this group that much but stumbled across this CD and glad that I did. I have just finished playing it and loved all the tracks. I definitely plan on sampling some more. It was worth my money.

    Ugh

I had high hopes for this CD, after purchasing and enjoying most of "America Town" but this CD, sadly, has only 2 songs worth listening to. I gave it away.

Five for Fighting in my Top 5

I have hundreds of CDs in my collection, and I would put this CD in the Top 5. There is not one bad song on it, and you can listen over and over. Every once in a while a band comes along that is pure quality, and this is the band.

John has another hit here. John has grown as an artist... from Superman to 100 years his compassion of humanity shows. His lyrical voice range is so inspiring and the whole CD has a wide range of songs for him to express his emotions!!! A must have!!

This CD is really good! I really like "100 Years" and there's other really good songs, like "Angels and Girlfriends". That's only the beginning, though. The rest of the CD is great, too!

Five For Fighting Scores a Hat Trick with this one

John "Five For Fighting" Ondrosik Scores a Hat Trick with "The Battle for Everthing". It is a great album and 100 Years is an awesome life ballad. It picks up where Superman left off. Thanks again john

    AMAZING!

Five for Fighting does it again in this brilliant album! John Ondrasnik's soothing voice and beautiful, uplifting lyrics will make you feel good inside! He takes the stress away and detoxes your mind with the lyrics of NYC Weather Report. He takes you back to your past with 100 Years. And, he makes you fall in love again with If God Made You. This is a MUST BUY CD!

    Awesome Again!

Five For Fighting has done it again. I wasn't sure they could fill the shoes of America Town but they did it, although in a different light. John's velvety voice climbs into my very soul, especially the tune 100 Years. Five For Fighting has a way of making one sit down and really listen, to ponder ones own life. I can truly relate the songs they play. They generate energy. I love these guys!

    A must have CD

Having loved "Superman", I bought The Battle for Everything after hearing "100 Years". I realized it was no fluke - I really enjoyed the sound of Five for Fighting. John Ondrasik's voice is so unique and pleasing that it sets him above other singer/songwriters. With "100 Years", poetically documenting the memorable stages of our lives, he has once again hit a common chord among us all. My initial favorites on the CD were "100 Years", "Dying" and "Angels & Girlfriends". "Dying" is a serious love song, while "Angels & Girlfriends" is light and whimsical. There's something in the CD for everyone. I've moved on to listening to "One More For Love", "Nobody" and "Maybe I". My favorites now are "100 Years" and "Maybe I". The Battle for Everything is a true gem.

    Awesome music!

When I heard the song "100 Years" was when I actually got into Five for Fighting...yeah I've heard "Superman" but "100 Years" was the one that really got my attention. I bought the CD because of that song mainly and after listening to the other songs on FFF's website. John's a great piano player and makes beautiful music. 5 stars!

100 years, beautiful music, lyrics from the soul....

This CD has the most beautiful music accompanied by words that evoke feelings of joy, pain, beauty, and love. Listening to this CD from FFF is a trip inside your own head. The song A Hundred Years is my favorite. You really do have only so much time on this earth, what are you going to do with it? This CD is filled with lyrics that memic life. The piano playing is as fine as it gets, throw in some harmonica, guitar and a drum mix in beautiful voices...you have a masterpiece, you have One Hundred Years....You have this CD. Dont let this one get away.

    Amazing!

There are only two CDs in my collection that I listen to without skipping any tracks. They are "America Town" and now "The Battle for Everything." Five For Fighting has released another masterpiece and it has surpassed all of my expectations! The melodies and lyrics of the pieces create an absolutely unforgettable album! The songs range from soft and sweet like "If God Made You" to quick and fun like "Angels and Girlfriends." A must-have for FFF fans and newbies alike!

    Five For Fighting Rocks

You rarely find an album in which every song on it is something you like. This is one of those albums. I highly recommend it. John's style is great. His other albums are good as well. He's definately an artist worth listening to. Can't wait till he starts touring.
