In 1865, Waynesboro played host to the last gasp of the Confederate army in the Shenandoah Valley. The Union forces, led by General Philip Sheridan, included a young brigadier general named George Armstrong Custer. The battle was also the last major conflict for famed Confederate general Jubal Early, whose defeat during the fight spelled the end of his Civil War service.

About the Author

Richard Williams Jr. is a Southern author who specializes in Virginia history and the Civil War. He is the author of five books and a contributor to numerous publications and websites. Williams has earned the Jefferson Davis Historical Medal for his work from the United Daughters of the Confederacy and is the recipient of the Kappa Alpha Order's 2007 "Robert E. Lee Appreciation Award," which recognizes the recipient "for excellence in his interpretation of the life of Robert E. Lee to the American People." He currently serves on the board of trustees for the National Civil War Chaplains Museum in Lynchburg, Virginia, and on the board of directors for the Waynesboro Heritage Foundation in Waynesboro, Virginia. He also conducts historic tours and is a contributing editor for Western & Eastern Treasures Magazine. Williams lives with his wife and family in Virginia's hallowed Shenandoah Valley.
