    The Bean Trees

This Southern novel is set on the outskirts of Tuscon, Arizona during the 1970s. This four star novel is great for anyone looking for a simple and classic read with a happy ending.
The main character, Taylor Greer, is an outspoken young woman who grew up in Kentucky with the goals of avoiding pregnancy and moving away after she finished high school. Unlike most of the girls in her town, Taylor is motivated and willing to make the most of her life. Her open-minded, driven, and spirited personality captivates her into the desire to change her lifestyle and seek freedom and independence.
This novel focuses in on the major theme of getting away and moving on with life. After buying a ¿55 Volkswagen, Taylor succeeds in achieving her goals and moves west. On her journey, she is given a three-year-old Native American girl whom she calls Turtle. After Taylor discovers that Turtle has been abused, she decides to keep Turtle and take her along her trip out west. Taylor helps Turtle grow and mature throughout the novel.
Taylor and Turtle end their travels in Arizona at a place called Jesus Is Lord Used Tires, where they meet a benevolent woman named Mattie. Mattie provides Taylor with a job fixing tires. Taylor then moves in with a woman named Lou Ann Ruiz, who also has a baby. Lou Ann has little respect for herself due to the fact that her husband, Angel, has left her. Because Angel was always demeaning Lou Ann, Taylor helps Lou Ann move on with her life and realize she is important to others. Taylor makes her life worthwhile and makes an influence on others with the help of a group of people whom she will forever consider her best friends.
This is a remarkable novel that will stick with you throughout life. It has an insightful and inspiring storyline that brings about the themes of growth, maturity, independence, and friendship.
