The Bear Came over to My House

( 1 )

Overview

The bear came over to my house to see what he could see. . . . And what do you think the bear saw? ME! But the bear doesn't stop there. He came over to get what he could get (wet), think what he could think (I stink!), and even wear what he could wear (a chair?). Join the bear and his animal friends as they spend the whole day going from one sticky mishap to another in this boisterous takeoff of the American tune "The Bear Came Over the Mountain."

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The bear came over the mountain to a little girl's house to see what he could see and to bring what he could bring. What did he see? What did he bring? Each question is answered in an unexpected manner as the page is turned, and the amusing illustrations will have young children laughing. The bear saw the little girl and he brought a swing. Then the poor fuzzy creature flew off the swing to land in a mud puddle shared by wallowing piglets. So when the bear finally arrived at the little girl's house to think what he could think he could only think, "I stink!" He went to the creek to wash and disturbed a snake, leapt over sheep and landed on a rake. Following the refrain of "The Bear Came Over the Mountain," the little girl tells the story of the hapless bear who tried to make himself at home but finally decided to head back toward that mountain. 2001, Putnam/Penguin Putnam, $14.99. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Carolyn Mott Ford
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-From sunrise to sunset, readers follow the adventures of a friendly though accident-prone bear. Subtly teaching verb tenses, the story begins similarly to the song of which it is a takeoff: "The bear came over to my house/To see what he could see. And what do you think the bear saw?" [turn the page]-"Me!" The rhyming text introduces the present and past tense of verbs such as bring/brought, think/thought, wake/woke, and eat/ate. In order to read the last word in the rhyme, the page must be turned, thus revealing the large brown bear's antics and the other characters' responses. Large white space surrounds the humorous watercolor illustrations, making the book ideal for group sharing. The bear's day begins opposite the title page, which shows him waking up with his doll, and ends on the imprint page at the back where he is seen reading a book by candlelight. An amusing tale that entertains while it teaches.-Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    One of our favorites

We purchased this book on vacation, my son was 3 at the time. He is now in kindergarten and we still love this book. The rhyming and rhythm of this cute story is both catchy and seamless. Today, my son can read this one by memory. It has been an excellent learning tool and I recommend this charming story to any parent with children birth-chapter books!!!!
