Jonathan was a strong eight-year-old boy who lived at the bottom of Hemlock Mountain. He had a rather large family with lots of cousins, aunts and uncles. In order to feed this large family for a special celebration Jonathan's mother needed a big pot. The only pot big enough to feed twenty-three people was at Aunt Emma's house and that was on the other side of Hemlock Mountain. Jonathan sets out alone for the iron pot, but as the cold winter night winds begin to blow the mountain is filled with strange sounds. Jonathan has been told numerous times that there are no bears on the mountain, but tonight could be the night for firsts. This is a simple story about how a young boy gains a sense of pride by running a family errand. It won the Newbery Honor Award. 2000 (orig. 1992), Simon & Schuster, Ages 7 to 10, $4.99. The Bears on Hemlock Mountain is the story of Jonathan who had to go over Hemlock Mountain where bears were. I liked when the bears came out of hibernation because he went under the big iron pot. I thought the illustrations were realistic. 2nd graders would like this if they like adventure books.

Newbery Book Title: The Bear on Hemlock Mountain Reading Level: Fourth Grade Genre: Fiction About the Author: Alice Dagliesh wrote this wonderful children¿s book. Not only did she write The Bear on Hemlock Mountain, but she wrote over forty more children¿s books. Sometimes she pulled adventures from her own experiences to write her books. Teachers love her books as well as children. Book Review: The Bear on Hemlock Mountain is a wonderful story about an eight year old boy named Jonathan. One day Jonathan¿s mother sent him on a quest across Hemlock Mountain. Jonathan was afraid he would meet a bear on the mountain. However, Jonathan was told ¿There are no bears on Hemlock Mountain.¿ Jonathan repeated these words over and over to himself as he crossed the mountain. He made it to the other side without seeing a bear. However, he must go back across the mountain in the dark. Jonathan really discovers the truth about whether bears really live on Hemlock Mountain. This book was enjoyable to read. I found that the young boy overcame his fears which helped him to take another step towards manhood. I would recommend it to children for reading enjoyment. This is exactly how the character felt in this story. The Bears on Hemlock Mountain is a great tale of an adventure. A boy named Jonathan is the main character of the story. The adventure begins when eight year old Jonathan¿s mother sends him on a quest across Hemlock Mountain. Jonathan is a little afraid that he will meet a bear. ¿There are no on Hemlock Mountain,¿ Jonathan is told. Jonathan recites those words over and over again in time with his footsteps. On his way back home, he had to cross the mountain in the dark. Jonathan finds out the truth about if bears really do or do not live on Hemlock Mountain! The Bears on Hemlock Mountain is an intriguing story that is skillfully written. The reader is kept guessing until the end if Jonathan just afraid of his own imagination or if there are really bears there.
