Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
... fills a pressing need in today's classroom curriculums. Ideal for home schoolers!
Children's Literature - Lori M. Saporosa
Theories of evolution and adaptation are discussed in child-friendly terms. While each chapter is part of a continuum they can be read independently. Activities throughout the book, such as conducting a sleep survey, recreating ancient art (petrograph), and making a footprint cast are educational and intriguing. The questions challenge readers and will encourage them to discuss what they have read and to pursue further information through investigation and experimentation. While the subject of evolution may be too controversial for some classroom settings, there are sections about archeology, sociology, and anthropology. An annotated timeline and list of international museums to visit are included in the text.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-A fascinating and entertaining introduction. McCutcheon opens with "Spot the Animal!," which covers "beastly vestiges" in humans (canines, claws, tailbone, goose bumps) in a manner that will have readers alternately marveling, questioning, and giggling. He discusses the science of evolution, our early ancestors, and their development. Throughout the book, the author invites readers to extend their information through further questioning and observations of the world around them. Although his friendly, humorous style occasionally borders on cutesy, ("If you were out to lunch, you became lunch"), students will likely enjoy the puns and silly humor. McCutcheon provides opposing views represented by the Bible and science texts. He maintains that "Most of us need science and faith in our lives-." Black-and-white cartoons add humor to this entertaining presentation.-Rosie Peasley, Empire Union School District, Modesto, CA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
