Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Rock memorabilia collector Hayward offers two coffee-table books of photographs of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. He carefully organizes the more than 200 seldom or never-before-seen photos per volume in chronological order and includes well-researched introductions as well as many brief commentaries by the photographers, from professionals like Cecil Beaton to others who snapped pictures as they stalked their idols. Hayward, who acquired the material from auction houses and the families of the photographers, also includes DVDs with silent footage of each group; the video of the Beatles is much more extensive. VERDICT Though offering a rare, candid view of two iconic rock groups (one shot even shows two of the Stones at a urinal), Hayward does not unearth any pictures that change the way we perceive these two bands or rock 'n' roll in general. These well-designed, lovingly produced books will primarily appeal to 1960s rock fanatics.—Dave Szatmary, Univ. of Washington, Seattle
