Overview

With over 40 million Americans now reported to be disabled, there are thousands whose physical limitations have forced them to live a mostly sedentary lifestyle.
In July of 2004, I was diagnosed with multiple inoperable and incurable conditions that left me permanently disabled. After several years of decreased physical activity and failed diets, I found myself not only disabled but also morbidly obese.
It was then I realized that if I was ever going to maintain control over my weight and enjoy some measure of continued independence, I would have to come up with a regular exercise routine that would burn calories and tone muscle without the necessity of standing.
After five years of trial and error, I finally developed a series of simple, easy- to- do therapeutic exercises that can all be done while sitting on the side of the bed.
I have written “The Bed’s Edge Exercise Handbook” for those who like myself, are still able to do some things on their own, but are fearful that if something doesn’t change, they may soon become totally dependent on others.
This daily exercise program is suitable for the elderly and can be easily remembered since it begins at the toes and ends at the finger tips, working all major muscle groups in-between.
The routine can be completed in fifteen minutes to one hour depending on the comfort and advancement of the individual and the amount of repetitions. Hand weights can also be added for an advanced session to increase the amount of muscle tone and calorie- burn that can be accomplished.
I have found that this “Bed’s Edge” routine of daily exercises has strengthened my muscles and increased my ability to transfer from chair to wheelchair, vehicle to wheelchair, and to stand and take the necessary steps for daily hygiene and bathroom independence.
I am neither a fitness instructor nor a licensed therapist. My only qualifications are that I have lived the experience and found what works for me. I only hope you will find that these exercises work for you also.
