Amy's mother wants her to go to Bennington after she graduates from high school. Amy has other plans for her creativity, and they don't include college. In PW's words, ``Klass enlivens it with humor and an extended cast of fully realized characters.'' (12-up)

Gr 9-12 This brief novel attempts to deal with the age-old problem of parents' expectations for their children. Amy Hamilton, an average student with a phobia about tests, has known all of her life that her mother expects her to attend Bennington College, an opportunity her mother never had. Amy's boyfriend Rob wants to go to art school, much against the wishes of his father, who expects that he will go into medicine in keeping with the family traditions. As is common in this genre, Amy and Rob are far more mature and rational than their parents. Unlike many adolescents, they have clearly defined their goals. They actively pursue their own options in schooling and experience with the help of a supportive guidance counselor. Amy, who loves to cook and sew, takes on an internship with a quilter; Rob applies to art schools in spite of his father's ultimatum. At the novel's end, Rob has been accepted by the college of his choice, and Amy is clearly started down the road toward the career of her choosing. While the novel is entertaining, it is flawed by its brevity and lack of clarity. Unrealistically opportune solutions to problems, young adult characters who seem overly mature and a satisfying but blatantly romantic ending all prevent the book from confronting the real issues which arise in this kind of family conflict.
