I had a collection of these books when I was small, and I love that my daughter is into them. We read them over and over. When I check the date on the back, sometimes I'm amazed at how long they've been around. It's a mark of an excellent children's series that they're still relevant. The first time I read "My Funny Valentine" I had to stop and stare at the pictures. Sister Bear sits at her desk at school, and she looks like a preteen. Brother Bear stands next to the dinner table and he looks like an adolescent. It makes me feel old; but it's nice to see them grow a little. The story itself is so-so. My daughter's not yet five, so she doesn't really understand the concept of teasing-is-affection. Sister sends a mean valentine to the boy who teases her; and I could do without the "h" word [hate]. But my daughter loves it and the message is good. I'd still rather read that Berenstain Bears then any princess drivel.
