Meet the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.  They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.  They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.  During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.  When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.  After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.  Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt .  It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears".

Over 50 children's books later, Stan and Jan still plan all of their books together -- both write the stories, and both write the pictures.  They live outside of Philadelphia in the country.

During the night, my little boy tipped over his toy bin and used

During the night, my little boy tipped over his toy bin and used it to scale his bookshelves. This morning there were a pile of about twenty books on the floor and he wanted me to read every one of them. For the most part, he would lose interest after a page or two, but a few he listened to right until the end. Those books deserve a write-up.
That he listened all the way through The Berenstains' B Book surprised me. I did lose interest after about the fourth page, but he was loving all those Bs, so I read it to the end. This is a silly little book, which, not shockingly emphasizes the letter B. It becomes quite a tricky tongue-twister long before you reach the end of the book. I couldn't really tell you what specifically my three-year-old liked about the book, but he did really enjoy it.
The illustrations feature the funnel-snouted animals of the Berenstains -- cute and colorful, but not easily recognizable, and, therefore not my favorite style. Again, my little boy liked all the silly images and colors, even if he didn't believe me that the bear was supposed to be a bear.

    Absolutely the best!

Our son memroized this as a 4-year-dld and recited it at family and other gatherings. He is now 27 and has a master's degree and smiles when we talk about it. It helped his memory skills, his public speaking, and reading skills. It was the best of the Berenstain's! It needs to come back into print!

    The 'B' Book by Bailey

Actually it isn't Bailey, it's her mom Kelly. But Bailey rhymed and since that is exactly what this book is about, I thought it appropriate. I loved this book! Like other readers wrote, I had this book memorized and I watched both of my girls do the same thing. You thought wow! they can read! No! They just have an awesome way of memorizing it. What joy! The gift of loving to read. You just can help but miss those opportunities for your children. To create within your child the ability to use their mind to picture and imagine life how ever they want. I'm sorry to see this book is no longer available. I will find one for the 3rd generation, it may be battered and torn, but the words will be there. I will read them to my grandchildren.

Great book for all young children

I read this book to my son and before long, he was reading it to me. I now wanted to get one for my granddaughter so the next generation could enjoy. So sorry to see it is no longer available in book stores.

    Great First Time Reader Book!!!!!!

I read it to both my daughter and son, who learned to read this book. It made them want to read. They both learned to read by age 4. Now I will read their book to my grandchildren! It is a great book. Wish it was still in print!

    a celebration of B

This Book is funny and is full of B words, like 'big brown bear, blue, bull, beautiful baboon....' Another B phrase is added each time so by the end it's a long phrase. There is a surprise at the end for a sad Baby Bird. (my daughter dictated that paragraph)-- -- -- This isn't Berenstain Bear family book, with Mama, Papa, Sister and Brother but is a celebration of an important letter. It's fun to read out loud with a swingy feel to it.

Berenstains' B Book - Best Book!

This is a wonderful book! I read this so many times that I almost have it memorized. It is one of the most loved and remembered books of my nephews' childhood. I read it every day to them for several years! Well worth the read. Especially for the kids!

    Beautiful Bouncing Book

I found an old cassette tape of me reading this book at the age of six. And I can still remember all the 'B' words after 30 years! My wife (who is four months pregnant) heard me on the tape and wants to get the book for our firstborn.
