Library Journal
This anthology addresses literature, semantics, politics, and infirmity in its 21 essays. Kitschy topics such as Elvis sightings and lawns in suburbia also make appearances. Kaplan's choices are canny, undogmatic, and invigorating; his introduction clarifies the definition of this subjective literary form, neither fiction nor pure fact. Ursula K. LeGuin's outstanding discussion of women and writing is included (``The Fisherwoman's Daughter'') as is Tom Wolfe's controversial treatise on the realistic novel (``Stalking the Billion-Footed Beast''), which provoked much controversy when it appeared in the pages of Harper's magazine. Strongly recommended for almost any collection.-- Janice Braun, Medical Historical Lib., Yale Univ.
