The Best Beer Drinking Album in the World...Ever

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Some would assume The Best Beer Drinking Album in the World...Ever to be a rousing mishmash of well-known classic rock anthems, danceable big-beat extravaganzas, and the occasional Tom T. Hall-style novelty -- sort of a Jock Jams for the suds set. But while that record undoubtedly gathers dust in a compilation bin somewhere, EMI Canada's Best Beer Drinking Album takes a more literal bent. Thus, alongside tired sporting event and school dance staples -- Blur's "Song 2," the seven-millionth licensing of Violent Femmes' "Blister in the Sun" -- Best Beer includes a host of tracks with direct reference to taking a tipple. If they happen to be melodic, that's cool, too. There's...

There's Steve Earle's moonshine drama "Copperhead Road," Chumbawamba's perpetually misunderstood "Tubthumping" whiskey drink, vodka drink, the Semisonic novelty "Closing Time," and Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life." "American Pie" with its whiskey and rye appears in lame edited form. Kim Mitchell's mullet nugget "Go for Soda" fulfills both the beer angle and the album's CanCon quotient, as do the Northern Pikes with their fun rocker "She Ain't Pretty." The Best Beer Drinking Album's unlikely emotional center comes from Montreal's Bran Van 3000 and "Drinking in L.A." While the song's aimless daylight drinking vibe is true to the album's theme, it's also an enduring snapshot of the halcyon '90s and the brittle electro-pop fluff the decade churned out each summer. The memories this track shakes loose are plenty in number, and worthy of drinking to.
