Library Journal - Library Journal
Among the late Sir Nikolaus Pevsner's many accomplishments was the publication of The Buildings of England (Penguin, 1952-74), a 46-volume series of guidebooks to each English county. The book in hand consists of 101 excerpts, arranged chronologically from Anglo-Saxon churches to college buildings of the 1960s. Most buildings are from the Middle Ages, and many of the entries describe a room or feature rather than a whole building. Each entry includes a black-and-white photograph and one to three paragraphs of text by Pevsner. The selections, however, were made by Pevsner's editors, who mainly chose the longest commentaries. This book would have been justified by the extensive use of color photography. Instead, it is illuminated chiefly by Pevsner's wonderful prose and his love of English architecture. Dougals G.
