Overview

Susan Wojciechowski and Susan Meddaugh weave a laugh-out-loud tale about one boy's ghosts from Halloweens past.

Ever since Ben was a baby, his parents have concocted wild costumes for him on Halloween. He has been a magician's rabbit (complete with a giant top hat), a bunch of grapes, even a slice of Swiss cheese! Ben has hated every one of these costumes. But now that Ben is seven, he decides to take matters into his own hands and construct a costume that makes this the best Halloween of all! Susan Wojciechowski, award-winning author of THE CHRISTMAS MIRACLE OF JONATHAN TOOMEY, and Susan Meddaugh, creator of MARTHA SPEAKS and MARTHA CALLING, have conjured up a very special Halloween treat!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Ben had a problem. Every Halloween his parents had dreamed up a costume for him to wear, but they just didn't work. All of these memories were revived whenever they would look at the family photo album. There were photos of the year his older brother Michael was a magician, and he had to be a rabbit and jump out of a hat. His costume was scratchy and he just didn't feel like jumping. The next year Michael got to be the devil and Ben was stuck being an angel, with dumb cardboard wings. The worst was the year Michael was a mouse and Ben was a wedge of cheese. His dad had made the costume out of wood and it was very heavy. Ben's seventh Halloween was rapidly approaching, and it was time to take matters into his own hands. He does, and it becomes his best Halloween ever.

K-Gr 3-- For years, Ben and Michael's parents have made elaborate costumes (angel, devil, cheese, mouse, robot, mad scientist, bunch of grapes, etc.) for their sons to wear. But now, Ben is seven years old, and he finally tells his parents that he wants to make his own costume. His creation turns out to be an ``intergalactic-space-starship robotron armed with a laser-pulverizer-beam rod'' composed of a grocery bag and an empty paper-towel roll, and to him, it's The Best Halloween of All. Wojciechowski's funny story contains an important message for parents who tend to ``overdo,'' while Meddaugh's pen and watercolor illustrations blend with the text and add to the humor of this enjoyable picture book.-- Gale W. Meet the Author

Susan Wojciechowski says the idea for THE BEST HALLOWEEN OF ALL came after she acted as a judge for a Halloween costume party. "One little girl had a very elaborate costume," she remembers. "But it didn't win, and her mother wasn't pleased. I realized later that like that mother I was always constructing 'creative' costumes for my two boys without consulting them. From then on, I left it to them."

Susan Meddaugh, a New England Book Award Winner, adores Halloween and calls it "THE major Holiday" in her household, in part, she says "because it's the only time in the year when you get to be someone else."
