All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
As one of the most popular bands of the '80s, U2 didn't quite fit into any particular category. They were a post-punk band that quickly found acceptance from a hard rock audience, a group that made fully formed albums but often made their best statements on individual songs, especially during the '80s. Consequently, they're a very hard band to anthologize. Since they were most effective on single songs, it seems that throwing all of them together on one disc would work. The problem is, each of the albums, from Boy to Rattle and Hum, has a distinctive flavor that doesn't necessarily blend when combined, especially in the nonchronological form of The Best of 1980-1990. There's little quibbling with the featured tracks on U2's first compilation -- a few important songs, such as "Gloria," "I Fall Down," "Seconds," and "Two Hearts Beat as One," may be missing, but everything else deserves to be here "Pride," "New Year's Day," "With or Without You," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Bad," "Desire," etc.. Even though the song selection is strong, the album winds up as less than the sum of its parts -- each song is pretty great of its own accord even the single mix of the B-side "Sweetest Thing," which is, in truth, not much different at all, but the overall effect is a little underwhelming. On one hand, it may be a good choice for casual fans or nostalgia mongers, since it does contain everything they need to hear, but anyone who has more than a passing interest in the band will be better suited with individual albums.

    This cd is awesome

This cd rocks. By listening to the songs you realize how many great songs they have come out with and how awesome of a band they are. The vocals from Bono are unbelievable and the guitar playing by The Edge gives every song that extra something. What I also liked was getting to listen to some of the bands early songs that launched them into the big time. All of the songs on the cd are great. Some of my favorites would be numbers 1,2,5,7,and 9.This cd is definetley worth ten bucks. With that you''ll be getting a lot of great songs from a great band.

The only good thing about the 80's

An essential piece of post-punk that impresses you with its honesty and passion. I hope that didn't sound lame, because the album sure isn't - the core songs like Pride and Sunday Bloody Sunday are mixtures of political commentary and personal issues as well as of a punk rhythm section and an extremely melodic guitar sound. Get it! Just one question: Why doesn't New Year's Day have its last verse? The one with ''This is the golden age/Gold is the reason for the wars we wage'' ??? Apparently the song is edited from its original form on ''War''. E-mail me if you have any info on this.

The Greatest Hits Album Everyone Needs in Their CD Collection

Two years ago, I asked each one of my family members to buy this CD for me as a Christmas gift. I made sure to tell them to get the edition that came with the second disc: ''the B sides.'' I was surprised when I opened the present from my younger cousin, you know the one; she never buys a gift for anyone. From the time I got home that night even to today, I listen to this CD at least once a week. U2: Best of 1980-1990 displays all the greatest songs by this world-famous musical group. My favorites include ''Blue Skies,'' and U2's version of the classics (at least in my opinion) ''Unchained Melody'' and ''Everlasting Love.'' U2 has always had the amazing ability to evoke strong emotions about love and political injustices. This collection with its list order and the selections themselves take the listener on the journey from hit to hit as they expand their talents and insight to the ways and wrongs of the world. The best quality of this collection is, as a true U2 fan, being able to recognize the different producers of each song and knowing what was being relayed to the fan. This album infused a drive within myself to take my fanaticism to a new level. Each time I play this album (and the B-sides), I am rewarded with the awesome (for lack of a better word) gift of U2.

    Its totally tubular!

Yeah tubular, its one of my favorite albums ever, and I was not even a big U2 fan to start out with. But now they are my top choice! The album is so worth it. I recommend it to even my enemies!
