Overview

Long before he was crowned king of the weepy AC ballad, fans knew "Butterfly Kisses" crooner Bob Carlisle as a powerful blue-eyed soul stylist. The Best of Bob Carlisle reflects both faces of Carlisle's career, culling hits from his past eight years with Diadem and offering three new songs. "Forgiveness," "Mighty Love," and "The Truth (La Verdad)" showcase Carlisle the soul singer -- a side that has unfortunately been overshadowed by his glossier pop persona. "The Truth," the title cut off Carlisle's excellent 2000 release Nothing but the Truth, exhibits Carlisle at his best: a knock-your-socks-off performance of gutsy, danceable, Latin-infused soul. For those who like Balladeer Bob, however, Best Of has plenty to please: the new song "You're Beautiful" follows squarely in the footsteps of "Butterfly Kisses"; of course, that signature hit is a no-brainer for inclusion on any Carlisle retrospective, as well. "My Testimony," another new piece, features the legendary Vestal Goodman, making this a fine piece of gospel testimony, indeed. Best Of doesn't include any of the fine work Carlisle did for Sparrow Records in the early '90s, and the music business being what it is, a reissue of that material may be wishful thinking for fans of Carlisle the soul singer. In the meantime, collections like Best Of will have to suffice.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Ashleigh Kittle
In 1996, former Allies lead singer and co-founder Bob Carlisle watched his radio single "Butterfly Kisses" rocket to the top of charts, resonating with both mainstream and contemporary Christian listening audiences alike. Five years after this monumental success, he released the 2002 project The Best of Bob Carlisle: Butterfly Kisses & Other Stories, an album including the song now synonymous with Carlisle's name. Additional songs featured are "You're Beautiful," "Father's Love," and "Mighty Love."
