The Best of Boogie Woogie, Vol. 1: 1928-1930

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Cub Koda
The form known as boogie-woogie is examined in all its myriad strains on this 19-track collection. Beginning with a 1930 workout from Roosevelt Sykes, the set includes seminal sides from Little Brother Montgomery, Meade Lux Lewis, Jimmy Yancey, Pinetop Smith, Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson, and the infamous Speckled Red. The genre also moved into big-band territory, and like-minded examples from swingsters like Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, and Tommy Dorsey give a balanced picture of the form. Like other volumes in the series, the transfers are reasonably clean and the song selection is topnotch.
