Recorded shortly before Lyttelton changed his focus to swing-oriented mainstream, these numbers feature clarinetist Wally Fawkes, trombonist John Picard, and altoist Bruce Turner in the octet and look both back at the 1920s and toward the New Orleans revival movement. Lyttelton is in splendid form, the ensembles are exciting, and nine of the songs eight by the leader are originals. Highly recommended.
