In the heyday limned in this collection -- 1976-1986 -- Gayle's was one of the most recognizable and popular voices in country music. Her story begins with her 1977 pop blues masterpiece, "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blues," which towered over the country and pop charts and remains her signature song. In fact, 9 of the 19 tracks here topped the country chart, and 7 were Top 30 Adult Contemporary hits. Gayle can effectively maneuver around an up-tempo song -- her loose, swinging vocal on 1984's No. 1 hit "Turning Away" is one of her best on record -- but she's a juggernaut on deliberately paced ballads and languorous mid-tempo heartbreakers. Check out how she lays the hurt all over 1983's deceptively upbeat "Baby, What About You." On "Everything I Own," she explores places inside her broken heart that David Gates could only hint at in Bread's original version. This hit-filled, multiple-hanky sob fest is a gorgeous testament to Gayle's talents and her enduring legacy.

Rhino's 2002 release The Very Best of Crystal Gayle has many of her biggest hits, but it's not necessarily a representative collection. That's because the 19-track compilation concentrates on recordings that WEA, Rhino's parent company, owns -- so after the first two songs, including her defining moment "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue," it moves into her recordings for Elektra in the early '80s. Some of these were big country hits, some, like her Eddie Rabbitt duet "You and I," were even crossover hits, but they weren't as definitive as those she made for United Artists and Columbia, nor were they as good. They tend to be a little homogenized, even when they're good, which means this collection is a little too even-keeled for those that are expecting more of "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue." Which means that even if this summarizes Gayle's '80s recordings well, it's not really the very best she ever recorded.
