Overview

The 2007 15-track collection The Best of Echobelly cuts three tracks from the running time of the 2001 compilation I Can't Imagine the World Without Me: The Best of Echobelly, adding "Bulldog Baby" and "Go Away" -- two songs that weren't on I Can't Imagine -- and cutting out "Call Me Names," "Here Comes the Big Rush," "We Know Better," "Atom," "Close...But," and "Iris Art." It's a fair amount of difference, but it's not all that notable since all the really big hits are here: "I Can't Imagine the World Without Me," "Insomniac," "King of the Kerb," "Bellyache," and "Car Fiction," which as before is provided in its French version. So, this winds up being as good a sampler of the group's entire catalog, although -- like before -- this means it also emphasizes that Echobelly were at their best at the outset and their momentum kind of petered out as their evangelical self-mythologizing settled into a career. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
