The Best of Gary Chapman: After God's Own Heart

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
Though Gary Chapman's recording career was overshadowed by that of his former wife, Amy Grant, Chapman has had some signature moments in his 20-plus years in the industry. This career retrospective highlights several of these moments, opening with "Man After Your Own Heart." Inexplicably, it was decided to use Chapman's stripped-down version of the song from Shelter, a poor substitute for the lushly orchestrated performance that earned him a Dove Award on the 1995 special-event project My Utmost for His Highest. A more sweeping emotional statement is made on "Sweet Jesus" from 1994's Light Inside. With vocals that often lean toward the earnest, Chapman's greatest strength...

With vocals that often lean toward the earnest, Chapman's greatest strength -- and career success -- has been as a songwriter; after all, he had a Top 20 pop hit with Grant performing his "I Will Remember You," and his songs have been recorded by a host of other big names. So it's a treat to hear Chapman perform "Finally," his country hit that T. G. Sheppard took to the top of the charts way back in 1982. Closing this collection is Chapman's dramatic take on the oft-recorded Christmas song, "Mary, Did You Know."
All Music Guide - Jonathan Widran
Amy Grant's ex-husband has had a solid career in contemporary Christian music, as this solid 15-track compilation attests. His rich voice overcomes even the corniest tune, like the opening track, "A Man After Your Own Heart," but he does have a tendency on "Outside" to be the faithful version of Gordon Lightfoot. He gives a country gospel twist to Rich Mullins' classic "Elijah," and modulates his voice between tender and edgy, depending on the genre-slant of the tune. His rasp on the blues-country hoedown "Gospel Ship" is about as good as CCM gets. Elsewhere, there are anthems, family-oriented story songs, and affirmations of God's power in his life. Diversity is Chapman's trademark, and usually the quirky tunes are more interesting than the slick mainstream pop -- yet his message is on target for his market. The collection closes with an emotional reading of the modern Christmas classic "Mary Did You Know?" Overall, a good retrospective of one of CCM's staple artists, and a strong introduction for those as yet unfamiliar.
