Here is an attractive compilation of Gershwin's greatest hits, with lively performances captured in state-of-the-art digital sound. The ever-popular Rhapsody in Blue is offered in the original version for jazz band, which is much preferable to the somewhat inflated orchestral arrangement one usually hears. The vivid colors of An American in Paris benefit from Telarc's superb recording quality as well as the verve of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra's performance. One could argue that the Variations on "I Got Rhythm" and some of the shorter solo piano works that fill out this disc are not Gershwin's most popular pieces, but they do provide a broader picture of the composer's astonishing talent -- and the interpretations are first class all the way.
