Overview

Although this CD draws its 22 selections from clarinetist Pete Fountain's best period (his years on the Coral label), the selections picked are sometimes a bit eccentric. Fountain is heard playing Dixieland with some of his bands, but is also joined by -- choral groups and occasional strings; no personnel listing or even recording dates are included. There is some good music along the way (such as "While We Danced at the Mardi Gras," "China Boy," "High Society," "Over the Waves" and "Indiana"), and even if this material deserved more knowledgeable treatment, most of these recordings are otherwise out-of-print; few are available elsewhere on CD.

This mixture of studio and live performances, New Orleans jazz and big band dance numbers, includes several predictable tracks (Saints, St. Louis Blues) but also some less-expected ones such as an interesting medley of Fascination, Basin Street and Tin Roof blues, and Way Down Yonder in New Orleans, plus a brave choice: Stranger on the Shore, which was such a huge hit for another clarinetist. The arrangment differs dramatically from Acker Bilk's, however, by being mostly up-tempo. An especially appealing number is the arrangement of You're Nobody Til Somebody Loves You. The sound quality is good, without the significant variations in volume all too common on anthology CDs. My one criticism is the virtual absence of liner notes. There's some impressive percussion on some of the numbers, and I would like to know who it is. Also, several cuts are credited simply to "Pete Fountain and Orchestra." So what orchestra, already? All in all, a nice introduction to Fountain's work.
