Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Scott Schinder
In a consistently brilliant recording career that spans more than 30 years, Richard Thompson has built a remarkable and durable body of work that continues to inspire widespread admiration and fierce devotion. For many of the great singer/songwriter/guitarist's admirers -- a group that includes the likes of R.E.M., Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, David Byrne, and Los Lobos, all of whom have covered his compositions -- Thompson's most musically innovative and emotionally resonant work was his series of '70s albums in partnership with his then-wife Linda, whose luminous, riveting vocals were an ideal vehicle for Richard's incisive songwriting and inventive guitar work. ...

The 16-track Island Records Years offers an excellent sampling of the pair's output during that fertile period, including such future Thompson standards as "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight," "Hokey Pokey," "A Heart Needs A Home," "Dimming of the Day," and "For Shame of Doing Wrong." Also featured is a rare live version of the darkly compelling "Calvary Cross," which showcases Richard's fiery guitar work.
