The Best of Sir Georg Solti (The Millennium Collection)

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann

Szurly, charged with assembling a one-disc summary of the recordings of conductor Sir Georg Solti for Universal Music's 20th Century Master - The Millennium Collection series of discount-priced best-ofs, has gone exclusively for old warhorses in his selections. But it might equally be said that such an approach is appropriate for Solti, a venerable figure who spent 48 years 1947-1995 recording for Universal's Decca label, including over 250 albums that featured over 40 operas according to Szurly's liner notes, among them the first complete studio recording of Wagner's Ring Cycle with the Vienna Philharmonic. From that recording, listeners hear the five-plus minutes of "Entry of the Gods into Valhalla," an appropriate excerpt. Elsewhere, listeners get familiar music from Berlioz "Hungarian March," an obvious choice for the Hungarian-born Solti, Bizet, Borodin, Elgar, Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky, performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra under Solti's baton. The interpretations are always vigorous and precise. Obviously, the conductor's career cannot be compressed into 66 and a half minutes and eight selections, but there are some excellent performances of standard symphony repertoire here at a reasonable price.
