The Best of the Staple Singers [Stax]

( 4 )

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Richie Unterberger
The best and most famous cuts from their glory years at Stax. Includes their massive hits "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There"; less famous but similar gospel-funk fusions like "Touch a Hand (Make a Friend)" and "Heavy Makes You Happy (Sha-Na-Boom Boom)"; and less expected items like a cover of "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay." It does not, however, have their 1975 number one single "Let's Do It Again," which they recorded just after cutting their ties to Stax.

    more from this reviewer

    Essential.

You see, The Staple Singers, in my opinion are an inextricable part of musicology, as well as Black American History. And the reason--with all due respect to the rest of the family--is Mavis Staples. The sound of Mavis Staples voice is the illustration of the state of Black Music in the era of Stax Music. It's labored, pained, but at the same time hopeful and deep. The combination of Mavis' lead, and just the way the track sounds--like the unmistakable groove of "I'll Take You There", for starters--thanks to the backing vocals and band...indescribable. Real lovers of soul music, those who want to know the influences of today's genuine R&B artists (Prince, Alicia Keys, Raphael Saddiq, Leela James), know that The Staple Singers were more than just another group. They were an American Music institution. This collection shows why.

    The Best Of

"Respect Yourself" "If You're Ready" "Sha-Na-boom-Boom" "Toach a Hand" and "Oh la de Da" are all titles ive loved and appreciated but there is nothing new on this album - enough to be a good album in my view. So,a download of my favorite titles would be a beter valua title.
