Barnes & Noble - EJ Johnson
Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, and José Carreras became the Three Tenors at a concert held in Rome's Baths of Caracalla on the eve of the 1990 World Cup final. Initially joining together to celebrate Carreras's victory over leukemia as well as their shared passion for soccer, they grew into classical music's phenomenon of the decade, performing in a world tour and two further World Cup concerts in L.A. and Paris in 1994 and 1998, respectively. Nearly a third of the planet -- two billion people in 75 countries -- tuned in to the last one, held in front of the Eiffel Tower. The Best of the Three Tenors gathers selections from the three World Cup concerts, but unlike their previous albums, each track features all three tenors together as impresario Tibor Rudas insisted, with James Levine and Zubin Mehta conducting the orchestral accompaniment. In all, it's 22 tracks of classic songs and famous arias, sung by perhaps the three most-heard voices in the history of the world.
All Music Guide - Stephen Eddins
Devoted fans of the Three Tenors (José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti) may already have the music included in this album of greatest hits taken from concerts in Rome, Los Angeles, and Paris, but for new listeners, this disc makes a good introduction. The repertoire is weighted toward the Latinate, featuring primarily popular song and opera excerpts from Italy, Spain, and Latin America, but also included are songs from The Merry Widow, Carousel, Singin' in the Rain, and West Side Story. Most of the music has a strongly Romantic, emotionally charged, lyrical feeling that's enhanced by the lush orchestral arrangements. The sound is excellent and detailed even though the concerts were recorded live and the audience frequently breaks into spontaneous applause.

Over the Top & Thoroughly Entertaining

What can be said about the Three Tenors that hasn't already been remarked on, or joked about. Forget the hype. They are fantastic, always and this records boils down the recordings to a truly best of collection. Over the top? Bombastic? Schmaltzy thunder? Oh but of course. Enjoy!
