The Best of Tragedy

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Alex Henderson
Motorcycle crashes, racing accidents, suicides, cars getting stuck on the railroad tracks -- these are the sort of themes that define The Best of Tragedy, one of the most interesting (if depressing) compilations that DCC Compact Classics assembled in the 1990s. None of the 1950s and 1960s hits on this 1995 release have happy endings; on The Best of Tragedy, young romances are likely to be ended by a car or motorcycle crash (the Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack," Ray Peterson's "Tell Laura I Love Her," J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers' "Last Kiss") or a suicide (Dickey Lee's "Patches"). The Best of Tragedy is primarily a rock/pop compilation, although it detours into folk with the Kingston Trio's "Tom Dooley" (which describes a man who has been sentenced to death by hanging) and country-pop with Marty Robbins' "El Paso," a tragic tale of the old West that was a number-one hit for Robbins in 1960, and was subsequently covered by the Grateful Dead. Robbins isn't the only country-pop singer on this disc; The Best of Tragedy also contains Bobbi Gentry's haunting "Ode to Billy Joe" and Skeeter Davis' 1963 smash "The End of the World." Although the latter isn't really country, Davis did make some important contributions to country-pop; arguably, Davis was -- like Brenda Lee and Wanda Jackson -- a 1960s equivalent of Shania Twain or Lee Ann Rimes. In other words, she did her part to make country safe for rock and pop fans. Actually, "The End of the World" is the CD's least tragic offering -- it ends in heartbreak, but at least it doesn't end in death. Nonetheless, the tune is so melancholy that it fits right in. Labels should be saluted when a compilation is thoughtfully assembled, and The Best of Tragedy is exactly that.
