Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Vogue® Knitting Magazinewas published from the early 1930s until the late 1960s. In 1982, it was revived from knitting obscurity by Condé Nast Publications, and today, high-fashion knitting and Vogue® Knitting are synonymous. This anthology includes the best of the best essays appearing in the magazine over the last 25 years, including profiles of knitwear designers and well-known knitters as well as articles on the history of knitting, techniques for beginning and advanced knitters, and designing knitwear, fibers, and finishing. Articles include Barbara Walker's essay, "How I Discovered Knitting...And Why" (1984), a look into the mind of the author of four classic treasuries of knitting patterns, and "Knitting the Best Way" (1986), in which opinionated knitter Elizabeth Zimmermann holds forth on the American vs. Continental knitting controversy. Of special interest is the prefatory essay on the history of the magazine, which is accompanied by photographs of Vogue® Knittingcovers dated from 1982 to 2006. Highly recommended for public library and academic textile collections.
