Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Jake is excited. Today is pet day at school and he is sure that his dog Buddy will perform the best tricks. Andy's fish swims and blows bubbles. Kayla's cat can climb trees. Lucy's rat moves its whiskers. Jake's anticipation grows with each demonstration. He knows that Buddy will do better. Then it is his turn. He tells Buddy to chase a ball. Buddy just sits and wags his tail; likewise when Jake tells him to lie down and then to roll over. Jake is so disappointed that tears come to his eyes. Then the teacher announces lunch time. Buddy runs quickly to Jake's desk and brings Jake his backpack with his lunch inside. The class agrees this is the best trick of all. Colorful cartoonlike illustrations enhance the simple story. This Level 2 Reader has longer sentences and higher vocabulary than Level 1 Readers and includes easy dialog. A note to parents and caregivers is provided with suggestions for encouraging young readers. Part of the "Pet Club" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
