Description: This general overview of the field of hematology provides a succinct description of major topics.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide both physicians in training and in practice a quick yet comprehensive reference to hematology. Although there are similar books, the authors have compiled a book that accomplishes these objectives well.
Audience: The book is targeted to physicians in training and to primary care physicians involved in the care of patients with hematologic disorders. The content is appropriate for this target audience. The book does not provide sufficient detail for fellows obtaining their training in hematology. The authors are well suited to assemble this book.
Features: The book provides a review of both benign and malignant hematologic disorders. In addition, there is a well-written chapter on issues in blood transfusion, a topic sometimes overlooked in hematology texts. An unique and valuable component is an explanation of laboratory testing done in hematology. This includes not only standard tests, but the newer techniques, such as flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics, and functional genomics, which are critical to the understanding of hematologic disorders. The book is very current and covers recent advances in diagnosis and treatment of hematologic disorders.
Assessment: In general, this is valuable as a quick reference for physicians involved in the care of patients with hematologic disorders. It provides an easy to read review of the newer advances in the field. For more detail, particularly on pathophysiology or rare disorders, a more comprehensive book should be consulted.
